About the Artist
Arlissa Vaughn, artist
Arlissa Vaughn

Arlissa primarily works with acrylic paint and digital mediums to create works revolving around themes of destiny and spirituality. She obtained a BFA from East Carolina University in 2005, and in the same year was diagnosed with the vision impairing disease of retinitis pigmentosa. Though the disease has not yet affected her art making abilities, it has given her an increased motivation to make as much art as possible.

Arlissa has exhibited both nationally and internationally, been artist-in-residence in Hungary and NYC, and is the founder of Visual Overture Magazine. She currently resides in Southern California where she regularly makes and exhibits art, enjoys outdoors recreation, and spends time with her husband.

Artist Statment

"Texture and color are the backbone of all my art. These two elements are firstly laid in using a special technique of watery paint with plastic laid on top to achieve an allover atmospheric effect. The technique is itself a symbolic act representative of what my art is trying to share. Our futures are influenced by so many causes, both physical and spiritual; similarly, this technique influences the painting in ways that are uncontrollable and won't be fully displayed until the plastic is removed. Later, the paint is revealed to show a unique layering of colors that reminds me how the many pieces of our life fit together to form a complete journey.

At times I choose to develop these textures of positive and negative spaces to further complete an abstract piece, while other times I place imagery created by contour drawings or expressionistic painting on top. Occasionally I also incorporate digital media by using the plastic texturing technique over a digital print. Or, reversely I can also digitally capture and manipulate the texture, and then create a print.

The results of all these processes are abstracted, highly colorful, and dynamic images meant to evoke thoughtful contemplation of destiny and spirituality."
